Battery life is one of the most important features of modern smartphones. That’s why OEMs often go overboard to get extra LOTS, not to mention that aggressive RAM and battery optimizations often lead to problems. And that is the reason why many users face serious problems when applications are not running in the background on Android. This can completely ruin the user experience and make some applications barely usable.

We recommend that you take some general measures to solve this problem, or at least mitigate it somewhat. For more information, see below.

Why are my applications not running in the background?

1. General troubleshooting steps when applications do not run in the background on Android.

Disable battery optimization

  1. Open the settings.
  2. Select Apps and notifications (Apps).
  3. Open all applications.
  4. Open an application that is not running in the background from the application list.
  5. Sensor array.
  6. Turn off battery optimization.

Fix: Apps not running in the background on Android

Allow the use of master data

  1. Go back to Settings > Apps.
  2. Open an application that requires a network connection to run in the background.
  3. Select Mobile data and Wi-Fi and verify that the application accesses Wi-Fi and mobile data in the background and when using a VPN.

Allow notifications on the lock screen

  1. Open the settings.
  2. Select Applications and Notifications.
  3. Press Notifications and scroll down until you reach the Notifications section on the lock screen.
  4. Allow all reports.
  5. You can also go to Settings > Display > Lock screen and tap the Notifications on locked screen option.
  6. Select Show all notification content.

2. YouTube does not run in the background

It depends on the exact nature of your problem. YouTube for Android does not support background playback with the minimized application or picture-in-picture without a premium account. However, if you have a premium account and YouTube is still not running in the background, you need to follow the steps below.

  • Activate background view and PiP. Open the YouTube app, tap the account icon, and then tap Settings. First open the background and set the playback to Always. Then open General and activate the Picture-in-Picture function.
  • Lock the application in the Recent screen by tapping the padlock icon next to the YouTube window.
  • Turn off battery optimization.
  • Allow the use of master data.
  • Disable hibernation of unused YouTube applications on Samsung devices. Go to Settings > Battery (or Take care of your device > Battery) and whitelist YouTube to add it to the list of applications that don’t fall asleep.

If YouTube is still not running in the background, check if you have deleted or reinstalled your application’s data.

3. May not work in the background

Also, some Spotify users have reported that Spotify is active for a while and then just disappears from the list of active applications. This rarely happens during playback (almost never), but many users use Spotify for Android to use it as a controller for other playback devices via Spotify Connect.

And, if the Spotify for Android app isn’t actively playing music or podcasts, it’s just disabled for some people. This can be very annoying and often happens with Android skins with aggressive application completion in the background.

Here’s how to make Spotify run in the background:

  • Lock the application in the Recent screen by tapping the padlock icon next to the YouTube window.
  • Turn off battery optimization.
  • Allow the use of master data.
  • For MIUI and EMUI (Xiaomi and Huawei devices), open the phone manager and YouTube whitelist.
  • Disable hibernation of unused YouTube applications on Samsung devices. Go to Settings > Battery (or Device Maintenance > Battery) and go to Spotify’s whitelist and add it to the list of apps you don’t want to put on standby.

4. Running WhatsApp in the background

WhatsApp and some other instant messaging services are often victims of aggressive memory management. The problem is that messages don’t arrive, especially when the screen is locked. This completely negates the usefulness of instant messaging.

Fortunately, there are several ways to solve this problem. First, go to Settings and open Apps & Notifications (for some Android skins, just Notifications). Next, make sure the device is authorized to display all notifications when locked.

Or try these steps:

  • Lock the application in the Recent screen by tapping the padlock icon next to the YouTube window.
  • Turn off battery optimization.
  • Allow the use of master data.
  • Disable hibernation of unused WhatsApp applications on Samsung devices. Go to Settings > Battery (or Caring for your device > Battery) and whitelist WhatsApp.

5. Mail does not work in the background

We’ve previously reported on the problems with Gmail notifications that many Android users are experiencing. These problems seem to occur mostly on Samsung devices. But Xiaomi, Huawei and even OnePlus are not that far behind. At least according to the reports. Of course, the goal is to extend battery life, but at what cost? Maybe an important message arrives and you miss it because Gmail isn’t running in the background.

You can follow the previous steps to resolve this issue, but the best option is to just click on the padlock in the Contacts menu and repeat the process if the application is disabled after a restart.

6. Google Photos will not load in the background

All the above steps can be applied to solve the problem with Google Photos when photos/videos are not uploading in the background. It is particularly important that the application has access to Wi-Fi (and/or mobile data) in the background.

Don’t forget to enable background syncing as well, since Google Photos is part of Google Backup. This method allows you to save Google Photos, as well as your phone settings, call logs, and messages. You can usually turn synchronization on and off with a shortcut tile.
