The Windows 10 operating system offers its users many trivial but important functions and features. One of these functions is drag and drop, which allows users to move files between different locations. But if the user can’t drag in Windows 10, it’s pretty hard to work, isn’t it?
What to do if you can’t drag in Windows 10
Drag and drop is a faster and relatively easy way to transfer files and content under Windows 10. This seems much more convenient when you have the current and final position windows open on your screen. It also gives a visual indication of the movement of the file. This function can be useful as a backup function when copying and pasting does not work properly.
The following solutions provide details on what to do if you cannot drag and drop in Windows 10.
1. Press the Esc key
In most cases the last drag-and-drop action is stuck in the memory of Windows 10 because of a program or server. As a result, users cannot launch new drag and drop visual events. So select the content you want to transfer and press the Esc key on your keyboard to cancel this interface. The spare key solution does not always guarantee success, but is worth a try.
2. Windows 10 Update
Outdated versions of Windows 10 may also be the reason why you can’t drag and drop into Windows 10. Make sure you have installed the latest Windows update to avoid the drag and drop problem.
Go to the Preferences window and click Update and Security.
alt=Click Upgrade and Safety 9 width=640 height=325 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutionss-To.png data-ez= />Click Upgrade and Safety
On the Updates tab in the left pane, select Check for updates.
alt=Download when new updates are available 5 width=640 height=303 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609572887_919_Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutions-To.png data-ez= />Click Download to download new updates.
Windows checks for new updates and tells you if you need to install them. The system will automatically download and install the new changes. After performing these steps, you can determine whether the towing action works if you do not see a visual indication while the action is running.
3. Diagnosis and troubleshooting of plant and equipment
You can launch the Hardware and Devices Handling Tool if you cannot drag and drop it into Windows 10. However, the diagnostics program is not available for Windows 10 version 1809 and later. You can skip this solution if the Hardware Troubleshooter is not available.
To start, open the control panel using the search box in the taskbar. Then open the Troubleshooting option.
Now select Hardware and Sound. Select Configure Device. Press the Next button to start the troubleshooting program.
4. Uninstalling and reinstalling mouse drivers
Your mouse may not work properly if you cannot drag it into Windows 10. In this case, consider uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse drivers to see if it works.
The first instruction is to open the Device Manager from the search box in the Start menu of the taskbar. You can also press Windows + R, open the Run dialog box, type devmgmt.msc, and click Run to open the Device Manager.

Then click with the mouse and other pointing devices.
Now right-click on the device you want to unpack and select Remove.

After uninstalling the driver, restart your Windows computer. The drivers are reinstalled after a restart.
5. Reboot file explorer
Restarting Windows Explorer is one of the most common solutions when you can’t drag and drop in Windows 10. Your screen may disappear a few moments after you turn off Windows Explorer, but don’t panic. It’s restored automatically.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the Windows Task Manager. Then click on the Details tab in the status bar and locate the explorer.exe process.
Right-click on the process and select End of Process Tree to exit Explorer.

The explorer.exe process is restarted and brings the PC back to its previous state. Make sure the drag problem does not work on a Windows computer.
6. Deactivate UAC
Changing key data in the registry can be a dangerous task as it can affect the system. However, you can test and adjust the value to see if it suits you.
First press the Windows + R key to open the Run command. Type Regedit in the empty field and press the Enter key. By following these instructions, you can open the registry; you can also open it by typing the registry editor in the search area of the taskbar.
Now go to the next track:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESFTWARemicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem

After you make the necessary changes, boot up your Windows computer and make sure you can drag and drop files and folders or other content.
7. Change in height and width of trailers
The height and width of the slide on a Windows PC can be adjusted to the user’s preference. If you can’t drag in Windows 10, this is one of the easiest solutions to test.
Open the registry using the search box in the Start menu or the Run window. Then go to the next number in the left panel.
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSystemControlDesktop
alt= place height and width 1 width=567 height=419 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609572895_111_Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutionss-To.png data-ez= />Locate Slide Height and Width
Then double-click the options DataHeight and DataWidth in the right pane and change their number. Make sure you set a high value for both objects.
alt= change height 1 width=376 height=159 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609572896_624_Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutions-To.png />Draw height editing
Check if these steps help solve the drag and drop problem in Windows 10.
8. Production of SFC and DISM scanners
The System File Checker scans the system for damaged files and replaces them with new files. The Quick Start Guide shows you how to perform an SFC analysis using the command line window to solve the drag problem.
To perform a DISM scan, open a Command Prompt window in Administrator mode and execute the following commands.
Log out/align/clean images0/ScanHealth
Deactivation/optimisation/contamination of images/resetting the status
alt=DISM scan 3 width=630 height=298 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609572897_951_Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutions-To.png />DISM scan
Once these two processes have been successfully completed, check if you can drag and drop the content.
9. Remove and replace the guardrails
Fences is a Windows utility that helps you clean up and organize your files and folders on the desktop. It automatically places shortcuts and icons for all applications in shaded areas called fences. If you have this program, you will need to uninstall and reinstall it.
After uninstalling the locks, you must delete all Stardocks files and their contents from the Program and Application Data folders.
Reinstall the Fences utility and go to View. Automatically disable symbols and align the symbols with the grid settings. Verify that dragging and dropping does not work in Windows 10 after following these steps.
10. Using a clean starter loader
If you have recently installed new programs, you can restart to see if there are any problems with the program when you use drag and drop. A Clean Boot helps users to run a Windows 10 PC with a minimum set of drivers to evaluate the program causing the problem.
To start a Clean Boot, open the Run window by pressing the Windows + R button. Type msconfig in the Run window and click OK to continue.
alt=type msconfig and click ok 4 width=393 height=197 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609572897_152_Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutions-To.png />Open System Configuration
Now select the Service tab in the System Configuration window. At the bottom of the Hide all Microsoft services checkbox, select the Disable all option.
alt=hide-microsoft services 1 width=567 height=381 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609572898_668_Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutionss-To.png />Hide all Microsoft services and click Disable All
Now click on the Start tab and on the Open Task Manager option.
Go to the Run tab, right-click on the program and select Disconnect. Then close the window.
alt=click Open Task Manager 4 width=567 height=381 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609572899_711_Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutions-To.png /> On the Start tab, click Open Task Manager.
Now go back to the system configuration window and choose Apply and OK. Reboot your Windows 10 computer and make sure you still can’t drag and drop it to Windows 10. If the boot process does not provide a solution to the rut problem that does not work, proceed to the next solution.
11. Performing start-up recovery
Start-up is an advanced process; make sure you don’t go directly to this solution before applying simple methods. First insert the Windows installation disk or USB stick and restart your Windows computer. You must press any key to start the DVD.
When the Windows installation page opens, click Restore Windows 10 computer to run the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). Now click Select option and select the language, time and other options, and then click Next. Then select Restore Computer. Select the operating system and click Next.
Now select Troubleshooting and click on Advanced Settings. In the System Restore Options window, select the System Restore option. Check if there’s a towing problem that doesn’t work. Otherwise, install the latest Windows updates and restart your Windows 10 computer.
12. Change entries in register
If drag-and-drop does not work in Windows 10, you can try changing specific registry values to see if drag-and-drop solves a problem that does not work. This solution only works if your PC’s registry is corrupted.
First open the Register Editor by typing regedit in the Run window.
Take the next road:
ComputerHKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID
Now locate the file {679f85cb-0220-4080-b29b-5540cc05aab6} in the left panel. If you cannot find it, press Ctrl + F to open the search box, type 5540cc05aab6 and press Enter. This way you can easily find the file.
alt=Find value 1 width=569 height=372 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609572900_941_Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutionss-To.png />Enter a value and click Search Next.
When you find the desired file, double-click on the Attributes value in the right window and set the value to a0100000.
alt=Position value to drag in Windows 10 width=571 height=411 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609572902_350_Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutions-To.png />Check Attribute value in the right box
If the Attributes value is not available in the appropriate pane, it means that the drag-and-drop problem that does not work is not related to corrupt files and folders in the registry.
13. Resetting Windows10 PC
Some people reported that rebooting their Windows 10 PC helped them solve the drag and drop problem. However, rebooting your Windows 10 computer in many cases means losing all your important applications, files and folders; make sure you have a backup of all necessary files and folders before you restart.
To restart, open the Settings application and tap Update and Security.
Now select Restore in the left pane. Under Reset this PC, select Start.
alt=click Defied to fix cannot drag and drop windows 10 width=640 height=373 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609572903_985_Can’t-Drag-And-Drop-In-Windows-10-13-Solutions-To.png data-ez= />click Defied
When the blue screen appears, you can select Keep my files to perform a reset without affecting your personal files. All installed applications are uninstalled and settings are reset. Check the visual indicator while dragging; this will help you determine whether the function is working properly or not.
