Users of Apple’s AirPods have complained that their headphones are constantly disconnected from their iPhones. The problem occurs during phone calls and when listening to music on Apple Music, Spotify or any other music streaming service. Some users experience an interrupted Bluetooth connection every 30 minutes, while others experience an interrupted connection every 30 seconds.
There are many different factors that can explain why AirPods may disconnect from your iPhone or other Bluetooth devices you’ve connected them to. The most notable are compatibility issues with the latest version of iOS, hardware issues (it could be your Airpods or iPhone), and possibly some Bluetooth connectivity issues.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to determine exactly what causes the Airpods to keep disconnecting from your phone, tablet, or computer. Therefore, in this guide you will find some common diagnostic methods that you can try to hopefully solve the problem. You can test each method or combine one with another to find a solution.

Apple’s AirPods have an automatic ear recognition feature, which automatically detects when the headphones are in your ears. Once detected, it sends the audio signal to your AirPods without hesitation. Sometimes, however, this feature causes the AirPods to fail. That’s how you turn it off.
- On your iOS device, open Settings and then go to Bluetooth.
- Then click the information icon (i) next to AirPods.
- Disable the Automatic Ear Detection option to turn it off.
Put the AirPods back in the charging case and remove it.
This simple process helps most users. If the AirPods are disconnected, they may not reconnect automatically. Once the AirPods are placed in the case, they begin charging and are effectively disconnected from any paired device. After a few seconds you can remove them and replace them with ears. You will now be automatically connected to your iPhone.

Disable automatic switching
With the introduction of iOS 14, Apple designed the AirPods to automatically switch between devices when audio playback begins or when a call comes in. Try disabling this feature when other Apple devices, such as an iPad or Mac, are nearby.
Disable automatic switching in iOS or iPadOS
On your iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth, then tap the About icon next to AirPods.
Tap Connect with this iPhone and select When last to connect with this iPhone.
This process must be repeated on every iOS or iPadOS device that uses the same Apple ID as the iPhone.
Disable Auto Scan in MacOS
- Open the System Preferences screen on your Mac computer.
- Go to Bluetooth and select Options next to AirPods.
- Click the Connect to this Mac button if the last connection was made to this Mac.
