Common Steam, Blizzard, and Riot Scams You Should Know About

Gaming platforms like Steam, Battle.net, and Riot’s game launchers have made gaming on the PC and Linux so much easier. But more gamers also means more scammers. Worse yet, they’ve got a bag of tricks ready to separate you from your hard-earned loot, and even your gaming accounts.

Stay two steps ahead by getting to know the latest scams and how not to fall for them.

Fake Steam Trades

Scammers search public profiles for valuable inventories and then reach out via DM, Discord, Reddit, etc., to strike a deal. They’ll offer to buy your rare CS2 knife skins for cash at excellent rates or trade super rare items for less than they usually go for. They may even copy the profile of a well-known trader to make things look more legit.

Once you’re about to trade, they may offer a less favorable deal or ask you to deposit items with a middleman until the payment clears. Either way, accepting means losing your loot with little chance of getting it back.

How to avoid: Always go through Steam’s official trade channels. Also, make sure that the person on the other end is who they say they are. If it’s a famous trader, compare their Steam ID, level, and friends list, not just the name and profile pic.

Fake Giveaways and Free Skin Scams

These commonly target all three platforms and continue succeeding. You get an email or Discord message advertising great rewards like free Diablo items, League skins or RP, exclusive Twitch drops, etc. But first, you have to follow a malicious link that leads you to a fake login page. Entering your login details there sends them straight to the scammers.

How to avoid: Official giveaways and prizes will always be listed on Riot’s website or a developer’s Steam page. You should also be able to claim rewards from Steam, individual Riot games’ clients, and Battle.net directly. If something sounds too good to be true and asks for your account info, it’s likely a scam.

Gold and Boosting Scams

Sometimes, gamers are impatient. They want to clear that Mythic they’ve been stuck on in WoW or finally get out of Hell in Valorant, so they hire someone to do it for them. While none of these “services” are above board, the fakes will steal and sell everything of worth from your account or lock you out.

How to avoid: Never give your gaming account credentials to others, especially unknown third parties! Avoid boosting services altogether to stay safe.

Discord Impersonation Scams

While not a gaming platform itself, it would be impossible to imagine raid chats and team huddles without Discord. Sadly, it’s also a breeding ground for scammers.

Their favorite tactic is to impersonate someone. A scammer might reach out to you over a WoW channel, claiming they’re a GM, or they may pose as a LoL tournament organizer. They’ll then ask you to verify account details by logging in on a fake website. You might also get a signup form or “required tool” that turns out to be malware.

How to avoid: Real GMs and recruiters don’t send out random Discord DMs. If you do end up clicking on suspicious links or downloading unknown files, be sure to run a reliable tool like NordVPN’s next-gen antivirus to quarantine and prevent them from doing damage.

Accidental Report Scams

Another long-running and successful Steam scam starts when you get a random DM from someone who claims they accidentally reported your account. They’ll put you in touch with an “admin” or “customer support agent” who’s also in on the scam.

That other person may then ask you to reset your credentials through a fake login portal and provide your 2FA code. With these, they have all the info they need to steal your account.

How to avoid: Steam staff doesn’t reach out through intermediaries, and they never ask for your credentials – why would they? If you’re still not sure and have a decent VPN with threat protection, turn that on first. In case you’re wondering whether VPNs are safe — they will identify known fake login portals and prevent you from accidentally exposing your credentials.

Final Thoughts

Protecting your accounts is mostly about staying skeptical and keeping your credentials to yourself. Recognize these common tactics so you can spend less time worrying about security and more time playing the games you enjoy.

Just stay alert, use official channels for every transaction, and keep both your inventory and account secure.
